Temporal Gulch is a rugged, but beautiful streambed
that retains many pools, even
during dry spells. The abundance of water helps ensure
good bird populations. The gulch tends to be fairly narrow with steep
walls. This might be an excellent hike in the fall to
see color and migrating birds.
Access to the trailhead is by miles of jeep trail that
crosses the streambed a number of times before reaching the
trailhead. Some of the "V" shaped drainage crosses might even
prove difficult for longer vehicles such as 4x4 pickups.
More detailed information is available in the Directions. Only high
clearance vehicles should attempt to get to the
trailhead.
The trail itself is not very well traveled and becomes
faint in places. Sometimes the trail requires some rock
skipping. The trail is rough and rocky in some
places. I hiked the trail on 31 March 2014, but only
went in a mile or so before turning back due to some footgear
problems. In the short hike the elevation gain was from
about 5080 feet to 5400 feet. Later on, the topographic
map indicates that the trail gets steeper. I lost the
trail a couple of times resulting in some rock climbing in the
streambed. In most places the trail is fairly clear, but
narrow and rocky.
